Andrew looks at his watch. “I got work.”

I want this apartment, so I am prepared to wait it out; I read a text.

There are some people you will never tell on because, despite how much they hurt you, you love them deep down in a place you can’t control. And you can’t tell on them anyway, because making them smaller would make you smaller, and you can’t afford to get any smaller than this. What is there after invisible?

A motorcycle pulls up. “Is this her?” someone asks.

It is 11:00 a.m.

A woman emerges from the house next door. She resembles a French bulldog if French bulldogs wore leopard print slippers and a Shania Twain T-shirt. “You here for the apartment?”

Someone answers, “Yes.”

“I don’t know if I should be telling you, but there’s a problem with the heat in that unit. The pipes freeze.”

We nod thanks.

“And someone died in there —”

“Oh really?”

“Possibly murdered.”

Maybe, I think.

Every town has its quota of sketchy people, even on PEI. In Charlottetown you used to see them near the statue of Sir John A. Macdonald sitting on a bench pondering the future of Canada, which PEI took its sweet time to join. Or panhandling outside the liquor store. One guy has long grey hair and he always wears shades, a pink fanny pack, and no shirt. They call him Snake Eyes.

The charm-bracelet woman says, “That’s it, I’m leaving.”

“Okay.”

“The location is nice,” offers the dad hopefully.

“Oh yes, I’ve lived here my whole life and the street is great, just great —” says the neighbour.
